EVE Scanning: D-Scan, Probe Scanner & Probes

Scanning in EVE is really several tools. The Directional Scanner (d-scan) is built into your ship and is mainly used for situational awareness: finding ships, probes, structures, or other objects in a direction and range. The Probe Scanner is used with scanner probes to resolve cosmic signatures. For exploration, launch core scanner probes, use the probe formation controls, center the probes on the signature, reduce the scan size as the signal improves, and repeat until the site reaches warpable strength. Combat probes are a separate tool used to scan ships and other targets. In dangerous space, scanning and survival happen together: keep an eye on local where local is available, use d-scan often, make safe bookmarks, and do not sit still while learning the interface.
