Shield, Armor & Hull Tanking

EVE New Player KnowledgePublicUpdated 2026-08-24 11:04:18
Quick Answer

Tanking is how a fit survives damage. Most ships focus primarily on shield or armor rather than trying to maximize every defense layer at once.

Shield tanks often use mid slots for resistance, extenders, boosters, and related modules. Armor tanks often use low slots for plates, repairers, resist modules, and damage controls. Hull tanking exists but is more specialized. Buffer tanks increase effective hit points; active tanks repair damage during the fight. Resistance profiles matter because different damage types apply differently. The correct tank depends on the hull bonuses, activity, fleet doctrine, expected damage, and whether you need room for tackle, propulsion, mining, or utility modules.

New Pilot Guidance

More hit points is not automatically a better fit. If you fill every slot with defense, the ship may no longer perform its job. Start with corporation fittings or a beginner guide for the exact hull and activity you are flying.
